Types of Cloth Nappies

Cloth nappy systems explained by Leona Doyle

All in one nappy (AIO) - the absorbent part of the nappy and PUL (waterproof outer layer) are completely attached. An AIO is very quick and easy to change as you don't have the separate layers to remove.

An all in two nappy (AI2) - The inner absorbent pads popper on to the PUL layer and this can sometimes have a layer of suede soft cloth or microfleece attached to the inside. The absorbent pads can be popped out when wet and the outer layer can be used a few times by popping in clean pads.

There are also a few two part nappy options. With this system there is a separate nappy option and wrap.

Pocket nappy - a two piece nappy that needs an absorbent layer to be inserted into the pocket within the soft layer that is attached to the PUL layer. These need to be stuffed and prepped before use so they are ready for nappy changes.

Folded/wrap - a Terry square can be folded around baby like a traditional nappy and held together by a nippa nappa and the waterproof wrap is put over this. Also prefolds can be laid flat like a pad within the wrap.

Fitted/wrap - a fitted nappy will have either poppers or velcro closure. These can look like and aio but without the waterproof layer. So these need a waterproof wrap placed over them.
