How many reusable sanitary pads will I need?

This really varies woman to woman. It depends on the: length of your cycle, how heavy you are and how your flow varies across the month.

If you already use disposable pads make a note of how many pads you use each day of your cycle i.e. 7 on a heavy day, 3 on a light day.  Replace with the same amount of cloth pads per day x2 (to allow for washing).

As a general guide for a short and light cycle 6 daytime and 3 night time
Average length and flow 10 day pads and 4-5 night pads
Longer and heavier cycles 15 day pads and 6-7 night time pads.

How many reusable nappies will I need?

You will need somewhere between 15-25 nappies, depending on the age of your baby.

You can always add more nappies to your stash as you go if you are running out between washes, so start with 15 and go from there to see how you get on.

How do I store used nappies?

You can either store your dirty nappies in a nappy bin (any bucket with a lid is fine) or a waterproof wet bag.

How often should I wash the reusable nappies?

It is a good idea to wash new nappies before use, there are two main reasons for this: 1, to get manufacture dirt off the nappies and away from delicate baby skin and 2, most nappies and boosters will need preping. They are not usually at their full absorbency until the fabric has been agitated in the wash.

You can wash dirty nappies any where from every day to every three days, depending on the number of nappies you have. If you prefer to wash everyday, you may need to bulk out your wash with towels to ensure the nappies get enough agitation for a good clean. You can find the washing guides here.
